Vineyard Notes
The 2012 vintage was marked by a long growing season, with bud break occurring three to four weeks earlier than normal across the state. Our vineyards experienced minimal frost damage. Heat and drought were prominent through late-June, July, and August, however, September and October were significantly cooler months, with more pleasant fruit ripening temperatures. Two large storms caused some trellis and fence damage, including the Derecho in June and Hurricane Sandy in late October, although neither storm impacted fruit quality.
Winemaker Notes
Heavy on Petit Verdot from a banner crop, the 2012 Meritage is a delicately balanced Bordeaux blend, expressive of bright red fruit flavors. The nose is filled with cedar, red fruit, and earth. Hints of anise, herb, and plum fruits complete the aromatic experience. Bright fruits, leading with dark cherry fill the soft, well-balanced palate, with the Cabernet Franc contributing pepper-like flavors. Like a crescendo, the wine finishes strong with lingering spice and tannins. Un-fined and un-filtered, with fruit sourced from across the state and a non-interventionist approach in the winery, this wine is a true expression of Virginia terroir.
